ALL ABOUT STEVE

RAZORBACK FARM

I live with my wife Diane and our animals about an hours drive from Sydney, Australia. We live in the countryside (it's called 'the bush' in Australia) on a small farm. I haven't always lived in Australia, but I love it here and am very lucky to enjoy the wonderful weather and practice my favourite hobbies of crocodile wrestling, swimming with sharks, playing snakes and ladders with real snakes and collecting poisonous spiders! (OK, I don't really do any those things but I bet you were impressed!).

WRITING ROOM

This is my writing room. It's quite small, as you can see, but I like it because it's cozy. When I am writing I feel as if I am visiting another world - the world in my story - it's almost as if I melt into the page and become part of the book! If I am disturbed when I'm writing, even for a moment, it feels as if someone has woken me from a dream. Once this happens, I usually can't continue writing and have to stop for the day.

By the way...Diane says can you please ask Steve why he's wearing those stupid glasses and a wig?!

WOMBAT COTTAGE

Every day I walk down to the back of our property and visit Wombat Cottage. Wombat Cottage is over 80 years old, which is really old for a building in Australia. This is where I work and I love it. Our dog George always come with me and sits on his rug and guards me in case any wild wombats, potty possums or cranky kangaroos try to join me!

DOGGIES

This is George, he is my mate, and he goes all over the farm with me. When I write he sits on the rug in front of me or he is guarding Diane when she is gardening – saving her from attack by nasty worms and vicious slugs. Sometimes he dresses up. He thinks he’s a wolf but he’s actually turning into a fine gentleman-dog. He is a Blue Heeler Cattle Dog and his mum and dad were working dogs, on a real cattle farm.

AUSTRALIA

I arrived in Australia over 30 years ago and have lived in the Macarthur Region and Southern Highlands in New South Wales ever since.  Diane and I have 7 children between us, and we always say we should have lived in a shoe, not a house! We also have 6 lovely grandchildren.

DIANE

They say that to be an author you have to be a little bit mad. They also say if you marry an author you have to be completely mad, so here is a picture of my beautiful wife Diane, which proves that she is completely mad!  She's a mad gardener and a mad quilt maker and a mad sewer too.  She is amazing at all these things, as well as being a fantastic mum, an awesome grandma and the very best wife a husband ever had in the history of the whole wide world. In this picture she is carrying a water melon that she grew in our veggie patch. Have a look at the page 'Farm Life' to see more interesting stuff about our life in Australia.

AFRICA

I was born in Bovington in England a very very long time ago. When I was one year old our family moved to Africa but we went back to England and lived in Blackpool when I turned 5. I was 6 when my family moved to Swindon in Wiltshire, which is famous because Gilbert O'Sullivan the singer and lots of other famous people came from there. Your mum and dad or your grand parents will probably remember the film actress Dianna Dores - she came from Swindon too!  I met her when I was ten and she kissed me because she said I was cute. I never washed my face for three years, but my mum got cranky so I had to have a wash in the end!
